Demo Day Hamburg – Seeing is Believing
The SESAR Integrated Airport Operations (IAO) project, under the very large scale demonstration (VLD) umbrella of PJ.28, cordially invites stakeholders, industry partners, and aviation professionals to an exclusive Open Day event on 19th September 2019, hosted at the Hamburg Airport Conference Center. This event offers a unique opportunity to witness firsthand the effective deployment and operational benefits of cutting-edge SESAR technologies designed to enhance the efficiency and safety of airport surface operations.
Event Overview
The Demo Day is situated within the broader context of the IAO PJ.28 project, showcasing real-world integration and validation of SESAR ATM solutions that are part of the Pilot Common Project (PCP). Attendees will receive comprehensive presentations and live demonstrations illustrating the maturity and tangible outcomes of these innovative solutions operational across multiple European airports.
Highlighted SESAR Solutions
During the event, the following key SESAR PCP solutions will be introduced and demonstrated:
Solution #53 – Departure Management Synchronised with Pre-Departure Sequencing: Enhancing departure flow efficiency and reducing taxi and runway wait times by optimising sequencing and synchronization between departure management systems and surface operations.
Solution #02 – Airport Safety Nets: Proactive safety mechanisms designed to alert controllers to potential conflicts and hazards on the airport surface, facilitating timely interventions to mitigate risks.
Solution #22 – Automated Assistance to Controllers for Surface Movement Planning and Routing: Advanced decision-support tools providing air traffic controllers with real-time, optimized routing and movement plans to streamline aircraft flow on taxiways and aprons.
Live Demonstrations and Site-specific Implementations
Attendees will have the opportunity to explore and engage with the actual systems successfully developed and validated at both Pilot Common Project (PCP) designated airports, such as Nice Côte d’Azur, and non-PCP airports including Hamburg and Budapest. In particular, the Hamburg demonstration will leverage live airport operational data, allowing visitors to experience the system’s functionality under real-time conditions and to appreciate its capacity to enhance operational decision-making and surface movement safety in a bustling airport environment.
Access to Presentations
Comprehensive presentations and related materials from the event can be accessed under the Media and Links section on the project’s official webpage, providing ongoing reference to the insights and results shared during the day. Recent Developments and Strategic Impact
Since the 2019 Demo Day, the IAO PJ.28 project has substantially contributed to the advancement of SESAR solutions with measurable impacts on airport surface management. Enhanced integration between Departure Management systems and Pre-Departure Sequencing (Solution #53) has demonstrated reductions in taxi times by up to 15%, contributing to lower emissions and fuel consumption. Furthermore, airport safety nets (Solution #02) have proven effective in early detection of potential surface conflicts, aligning with ICAO’s Safety Management System (SMS) recommendations. Automated routing assistance (Solution #22) continues to evolve, supported by machine learning algorithms trained on live operational data collected during these demonstrations. These developments underscore the successful transition from demonstration to industrial deployment, reinforcing Europe’s leadership in pioneering innovative ATM solutions that prioritize safety, efficiency, and environmental sustainability.
