Demonstration Site
The third IAO airport demonstration will take place at Nice airport. It is the third busiest airport in France with 164.336 movements handled in 2016 and high seasonal traffic peaks. Nice airport has a complex runway layout with two dependent parallel runways, where the inner runway is used for landing and the outer for departure. In addition, the movement area is highly geographically constrained considering the amount of traffic.
Partners Involved
The VLD is lead and set by DSNA, involving technical staff and Tower Controllers from Nice, together with experts on airport new functionalities, technical support and validation experts. Airbus will be participating for the air/ground part of the demonstration and DLR will support the dissemination activities.
Content of the Demo
The demonstration at Nice airport will present a system that provides planned taxi routes for aircraft and enables controllers to update it with all clearances given over radio to aircraft. The departure manager (DMAN) will also take into consideration additional data, provided by the advanced Surface Movement planned taxi routes. Furthermore, the Nice demonstration will address the detection of Conflicting ATC Clearances (CATC) and Conformance Monitoring Alerts for Controllers (CMAC). Provided the participation of an airline, the added value of planned route sharing with aircraft equipped with an airborne solution (Airbus) will be demonstrated, as well.
The Nice demonstration will thus cover the following SESAR Solutions:
- #53: Pre-Departure Sequencing,
- #22: Automated Surface Routing and Planning,
- #02: Airport Safety Nets for Controllers.
Demonstration Setup
The VLD will take place at Nice airport. It will be a Shadow-Mode exercise to provide the operational realism required for a demonstration at the V3+ level of maturity but with sufficient control of the safety impacts of the exercise on real traffic. In Shadow Mode, the Tower Controllers will update their system in real-time using the new SESAR functionalities.
The related on board demonstration – if confirmed – will be based on a Live Trial on real revenue flights involving the operational staff, facing actual operational situations in real-time.
