Last week, IAO partners DLR, SINTEF, Hamburg Airport and DFS successfully conducted the first large scale demonstration for the IAO project at Hamburg Airport.
The systems have been setup und running during one week (25.03. โ 29.03.) for a number of test sessions involving controllers from DFS and Hamburg Airport. While DLR provided the ARIF Hamburg (Airport Research and Innovation Facility) as a framework for the trials (connection to the live data systems as well as the demonstration facilities at Hamburg Airport) and the HMI, SINTEF AS from Norway brought in an industrial routing optimization library that assisted the air traffic controllers by providing optimized conflict-free surface routing as well as safety net functions.
Besides the hands on working with the systems in the actual day-to-day operation, operators were also asked to assess a number of different traffic situations and compare their own solution with the one provided by the optimization library. Thanks to the support by the controllers from DFS and Airport Hamburg, valuable feedback and assessment by questionnaires is now available for evaluation.
